Mystify

Well, I have a few things to talk about today.  First off, I got a request from my brother Josh to try doing a Myst-esque picture.  It made me go back and remember playing those games.  For those of you who didn't play it, Myst was a point and click adventure game and one of the things that really got me excited about drawing and designing.  The whole idea was that people could create worlds by writing books, and then go into these books and experience the worlds they had created.  In the game your character gets trapped in this world and you solve puzzles to try and get back to your own world.  The environments, places, and characters that they imagined in the games were incredible, and truly revolutionary for the time.  The story and worlds are incredibly immersive.  I hope to be able to take people to incredible worlds like that.   Those types of games are rarely seen anymore among all of the fast paced, action packed games that are so prevalent.  But if you want to experience a bit of a bygone era of video games they are for sale for cheap, as well as many other classic games on gog.com.  You should check them out sometime.   I got the inspiration for this piece from the sequel to Myst, called Riven.

I also have a couple more speedpaints up since Monday.  I think I'll start posting one every day so keep checking up on the site.  Are there any places or environments you would like to see me do?  I also haven't forgotten about my more traditional stuff and I should have some more of that up soon too, especially some of the portraits that some of you are waiting on.

I've been feeling a little impatient with myself and my art as I compare myself to other artists.  My problem is I compare myself with artists that have 20+ years experience as professionals so of course they are going to be very, very good.  I find myself wanting to be that good NOW and am upset with myself at times when I can't make it all look so easy like they do.  But while I was digging around trying to learn from the experts I found a site that has some really good tips and pointers not only on design, but also about life.  I found one that talked about patience, especially as it relates to art and design.  Good stuff you should check it out.
