The Joy of a Simple Life

This was a fun project, it was my first portrait done in prismacolor on the black paper and I must say it turned out a lot better than I was thinking it would.  For some reason portraits always scared me. Anyway, this is a portrait of my grandfather.  I respect him for a lot of reasons, but one thing in particular is that he always found joy in the simple things in life.  He never was one for material things, he wore that same coat until it was tattered and torn and was literally hanging off him.  But he didn't need "stuff" to enjoy life.  He was happy being who he was.  He farmed until he was in his late seventies and even now, in his nineties, when most people give up on life he still lives at home, takes care of himself and his house, and goes fishing all the time.  People like him make me realize that death isn't nearly as sad as a life that wasn't lived.

So, enough philosophizing for one day.  Tomorrow is my first day as a full time artist and I can't wait to get started I have a bunch of things to get ready.  I am hoping to have some pieces to sell at the Mormon Miracle Pageant in Manti Utah and I have a personal project I am starting on as well. I don't want to say much about that yet but I am excited about it and will have more posted concerning that later.

This is my awesome wife JaNae taking care of our nephew while his mom has some much deserved rest time.  I can tell already JaNae is going to be a great mom.  Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers (and mothers-to-be) out there!
